How to Play Gingerman Rescue

Select Start at the center of the loading screen to open the welcome screen. On the welcome screen, select the play button on the bottom right corner to get started. Alternately, you can select training mode to replay any level. You will not earn points in training mode.

The game opens with a slideshow telling the story of the game.

On your keyboard, press the left and right arrow keys to walk. Press the up arrow once to jump; press it again at the top of your jump to double jump. Press the space bar to toss a candy cane at your enemies. You can only toss candy canes once you pick one up.

The game has visible controls when you play on touchscreen devices. Select the left and right arrows on the left side of the screen to walk. Select the up arrow on the right side of the screen to jump and press it twice to double jump. Press the candy cane button to the left of the up arrow to toss candy canes. You must play the game in landscape mode.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Your goal is to retrieve as many candies as you can and defeat as many enemies as possible. Move through the level and reach the gumball dispenser house at the end. Avoid getting hit by enemies and falling off the bottomless pits. Each piece of candy you collect is worth 10 points, while each enemy you beat is worth up to 150 points.

You start the game off with 5 lives. Each time you die, you lose a life. Lose all your lives and the game ends. Collect hearts to replenish your lives.

Levels are unlocked sequentially. Finish one level to unlock the next. You can replay any of the levels you’ve already beaten, but only on practice mode where you can’t earn any more points.

Your scoring is cumulative; the points you earn in one level carry over to the next. Your total score is shown on the bottom center of the welcome screen.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

You cannot replay a level to complete it, so make sure you explore it thoroughly to earn as many points as you can.

Pick up the candy cane as soon as you can. You’ll need this to hit your foes. Although you have the option to run away from your enemies, it’s generally a better idea to try to defeat them. Enemies move in a back-and-forth pattern and will not actively chase you, giving you a chance to snipe at them from a safe distance.

If you can’t yet pick up the candy cane, move slowly and watch out for your foes. Pay attention to their movement speed and walk pattern. Time your moves so that you can avoid them. In general, you have a better chance of avoiding or attacking your enemies if they’re running toward you.

We recommend this game for younger players, in particular school-aged children. The game is an excellent introduction to the platform genre but doesn’t offer a lot beyond collecting and scoring.
